Liquid tax on Elfbar in Switzerland: ⚖️ All information

Table of contents

From October 1, 2024, a liquid tax will be levied on e-cigarettes in Switzerland, depending on the type of product:

  • CHF 1 per milliliter for disposable e-cigarettes such as Elfbar, regardless of nicotine content.
  • CHF 0.20 per milliliter for liquid pods and refillable liquids with nicotine.
  • Nicotine-free pods and liquid bottles are exempt from tax.

Elfbar price increases in Switzerland

Due to the liquid tax, the prices for Elfbar e-cigarettes and liquids in Switzerland will increase significantly in some cases. Using the following examples, we'll show you what price increases you can expect.

Will the tax on Elfbars continue to rise in the future?

There are indications that taxation could increase further, especially if public health measures to reduce nicotine consumption are intensified. However, the current focus is on the newly introduced e-liquid tax, which is already having a noticeable impact on e-liquid prices in Switzerland.

Is vaping Elfbar now more expensive than smoking in Switzerland?

Due to the new liquid tax, Elfbar Vapes have become more expensive. If you look at the average cost per Puff Compared to other manufacturers, vaping Elfbar e-cigarettes is still significantly cheaper (about 50%) than smoking cigarettes. However, considering that manufacturers usually calculate the puff figures for vapes very generously, the costs are already practically identical today, depending on the data used. In the following example, we assume 600 puffs for a disposable vape with 2ml of liquid (in reality, it's actually less).

Cost Number Puffs Cost per 100 Puffs
Elfbar 600 (2ml) CHF 11.90 600 CHF 1.98
Cigarettes (20 pcs.) CHF 8.50 200 CHF 4.25

This calculation shows how dangerous the taxation of e-cigarettes is, and how important it is that vapes remain significantly cheaper in Switzerland than extremely harmful tobacco cigarettes.

How can you vape more cheaply?

  1. Use refillable systems : Unlike disposable vapes, Elfbar pods and liquids are charged only CHF 0.20 per milliliter for nicotine-containing products. This saves costs in the long run.
  2. Use nicotine-free liquids : If you switch to nicotine-free Elfbar pods or e-liquids , the taxes are completely waived.
  3. Take advantage of volume discounts : In our vape shop, we offer you strong volume discounts if you buy 10 or 20 of one variety at once.

Conclusion: How does the liquid tax affect Elfbar in Switzerland?

The introduction of the new liquid tax has made vaping in Switzerland more expensive, especially for disposable vapes like Elfbar. While nicotine-free liquids are exempt from the tax, users of disposable e-cigarettes and nicotine-containing pods face higher costs. A comparison shows that vaping can now be as expensive as smoking – unless you opt for cheaper alternatives like refillable systems or nicotine-free liquids.

What many people don't consider is the fact that the liquid tax also has a significant impact on the import of products. As soon as products cross the Swiss border, the importer must pay the entire tax, which requires significant liquid assets.
